JULY/AUGUST 2021 NEWSLETTER

New Zealand's community-minded diners serving more than food.

NEW ZEALAND HERALD - 28 July 2021

The Pantry, Invercargill

Let's be real: Invercargill likely wouldn't top the list of places you'd expect to find a cafe catering to vegan, paleo, gluten-free, and keto diets. And yet that's exactly what you'll find at the Pantry on Grace Street. A speciality food store known for cabinet food goodies and hot drinks, the cafe also creates revenue for the South Alive charity and its community projects, with the goal of nourishing the community. thepantry.co.nz

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN - JULY 2021
Over the July school holidays we had a blast down here at South Alive, where we had loads of free events for the youth of Invercargill. We did everything from yoga to lego, rock painting, cooking classes, story time with the library, and mini free comic book day.

We are able to provide these activities for free thanks to the ICC Wellbeing Fund along with mountains of thanks to the volunteers that donated their time and energy to pull these events all together.

We will have more fun stuff coming for the next school holidays in October so keep an eye out for this on Facebook.

VOLUNTEER - TERRI GIBSON

Kia ora everyone

Ko Terri Gibson tōku ingoa

I have been a volunteer for the last year and a half. My role as a volunteer is the gap filler, in other words, Claire has my number on special dial. I just get a call out of the blue to ask if I am able to undertake a task such as putting seeds in envelopes, sorting out the cupboards or even whip around with the vacuum cleaner, what ever helps.

What I like about my role is that things are not set in concrete, it's very organic which suits my personality.

How I got involved - I started up an art group at The Pod called 'Time Out Art Group' which brought a few of the mothers together who needed a safe and warm environment to work in. Claire made us all welcome and popped in to have a chat with us all. Now I am pretty blessed we have become great friends, not only with her but the rest of the staff too. On other occasions I have hired The Pod to do a Teddy Bears Picnic for my daughter and her friends as well as birthday parties for my daughter. It is such a wonderful venue, even my guests were impressed.

I would really like to thank the staff over the Covid time. I was one of the lucky ones that received food parcels and phone calls to check on me. I really appreciated it. I feel South Alive values are in alignment with my own personal values. I am grateful to the friendships I have made. I am no longer a stranger in my own community.

Ngā mihi
Terri Gibson
