Chair’s Message

Community led development is about local people contributing, taking the lead, collaborating and encouraging growth in order to strengthen and thrive.

Our purpose and responsibility is to listen and hear the heart of our extensive and diverse community with their differing needs and strengths, and then respond by enabling them to make change, restore pride and wellbeing, reduce anxiety (especially in these uncertain times) and most importantly to develop a strong sense of connection to their place / whenua.

The focus of our work is in developing and building strengths and encouraging participation at the South Alive Pod, The Pantry and right across the 9812 area. The way we are able to achieve this is through our wonderful volunteers. Volunteering also gives the benefits and tools people need to be happier, healthier, more interactive individuals along with a sense of purpose in giving back to the community and making a positive difference.

Some of the words and feedback from people within our community tell it the best
“I am grateful for the friendships I have made. I am no longer a stranger in my own community”
“It brings company into my days. I find myself engaging with others who I haven’t met before.”
“I love the community, there is so much going on…it is exciting.”
“The people, the positive atmosphere is contagious I have found whether it be retailers or shoppers or the general public in South Invercargill to be the most friendly in the city.”
“Great community, good fellowship, sense of belonging, people are real.”

We are celebrating our 10th birthday in 2022 and over this time there have been countless numbers of people supporting South Alive. This is a wonderful recognition of all these efforts.

We encourage you all to watch our space – there is much more to come. Visit our Pod and Pantry – by doing so you empower and assist South Alive projects to continue.

It is always all about the people – our people in South Invercargill.
